Abraham Munting (1626-1683) practiced medicine and later became professor of botany at the University of Groningen in Holland. Though he published many books on medical and botanical subjects, his most successful work, the Naauwkeurige Beschryving Der Aardgewassen (Accurate Description of Terrestrial Plants), 1696, was published posthumously. Artists working for the publisher embellished Munting's plates with bucolic or architectural backgrounds and often added floating ribbons on which the names of the plants are inscribed. The plants themselves remain the focal point, however, drawn as they are in Munting's eccentric, endearing style.
