This image entitled General Sam Houston, from Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization, was published on March 30th, 1861. This publication was created by Fletcher Harper, one of the brothers who founded the famous publishing house Harper & Brothers in 1857, and aimed to feature high quality articles and literature with a limited number of pictures, suitable for family reading. By the end of its first year, however, the journal had become a fully illustrated and sought after publication.

Sam Houston (1793-1863) is most well known as an American politician and soldier, and for his role in bring Texas into the United States and a constituent state. Throughout his life, Houston held office as the congressman and governor of Tennessee, was the commander-in-chief of the Texas army during the Texas Revolution, served two terms as the president of the Republic of Texas, and later was a Texas senator and governor.
