Description:

This hand painted lithograph from 1874 is a page from La Mode Illustrée, which was the unrivaled leader of the fashion engraving during the mid Victorian era. The fashion journal was published by Gilquin Fils, Imp., in Paris, France.

During the mid Victorian era, two factors directly contributed to the development of the increase in fashion engraving. First, the sewing machine was becoming widely used as paper patters were more accessible. Second, the increase in machinery and a booming economy produced a large supply of clothing and fashion trends for a population of middle and upper class women who had the ability to spend money on their wardrobe. This subsequently allowed the expansion of publishing fashion magazines, journals, and advertisements, in which the Paris based La Mode Illustrée was a leader.
