English name: Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus). From Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux (A Natural History of Birds), Paris: 9 volumes. Paris: l'Imprimerie royale, Georges Louis Leclerc, le comte de Buffon, Editor, 1770-1786.
François Nicolas Martinet was trained as an engineer and draftsman. Engraving book illustrations must have begun for him as a secondary profession, but he was to engrave illustrations of birds for some of the most influential ornithologists and scientists in 18th century France, including Georges Louis Leclerc, le comte de Buffon, Denis Diderot and Benjamin Franklin, and ultimately to self-publish.
These plates are beautifully engraved and colored, and generally very clean.
