Description:

Bahia de Galvez-towm. José Antonio de Evia.

This is the first printed map devoted specifically to Galveston Bay. It is derived from the 1783-86 survey of the Spanish navigator José Antonio de Evia (or Hevia). The Eugene C. Barker Texas History Center at the University of Texas at Austin has a hand-drawn copy of a manuscript map of the Texas coast from Matagorda Bay to Galveston Bay that shows exactly this configuration for the vicinity of Galveston. It bears the notation "Joseph Evia. Copied at Direccion Hidrografica Madrid 1875".
