Melite Insula vulgo Malta, Amsterdam.
A map of the island of Malta, characterized by the finely engraved graphic depiction of the topography of the landmass. A dramatic cartouche and the depiction of a battle at sea, possibly referencing the Siege of Malta by the Ottomans in 1565, complete the composition.
John Ogilby (1600-1676) was a Scottish translator, impresario and cartographer. Best known for publishing the first British road atlas, he was also a successful translator, noted for publishing his work in handsome illustrated editions.
