PROVINCIAE, Regionis Galliae, vera exactissimaque descriptio. Petro Ioanne Bompario auctore. From Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp, 1594.
This lovely, subtly-handled map of this famous French province features an excellent view of the delta of the Rhône River, middle-left, where lie the marshy Camargue and the city of Arles. Avignon and its bridge are found upstream just above the confluence of the Rhône and the River Durance. Following the Côte d'Azur eastward we find Marseilles, Toulon, St. Tropez, Cannes, Antibes and Nice, the oldest city in Gaul.
The map is graced by careful renderings of two vessels under sail, at left a Roman long ship and the other a contemporary carrack.
