Africa, with two inset maps, Liberia and Monrovia. From Tanner's Universal Atlas, H. S. Tanner, Philadelphia.
This is a finely crafted map with many political, geographic and historical details, including a list of the possessions of the respective European powers. The unexplored heart of the continent, over which the name Ethiopia is laid, contains only a small amount of speculative detail.
Just above this undefined region lie the Mountains of the Moon, long thought to be the source of the White Nile. Mistakenly shown in this map to bisect the continent just above the Equator, they are now known as the Rwenzori Mountains, which lie on what is now the border between Uganda and the DRC, and rise to over 16,700 feet at Mt. Stanley.
