Thomas Moran (February 12, 1837 – August 25, 1926) is hailed as the premier painter of the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. Originally from Bolton, England, Moran took residence in New York where he became an American painter and printmaker of the Hudson River School in New York. A talented illustrator and exquisite colorist, Thomas Moran was hired as an illustrator at Scribner's Monthly. During the late 1860s, he was appointed the chief illustrator for the magazine, a position that helped him launch his career as one of the most impressive painters of the American landscape. His immaculate body of work often featured open-air panoramic views of the American West during his extensive travels from Long Island and the Pennsylvania countryside to Mexico, Italy, and numerous seascapes. Moran offered Americans and Europeans their first look at several spectacular sites that are now preserved as national parks. His works figure prominently in public and private collections, and this original print is a spectacular collection piece.
