Description:

Cicely Mary Barker (1895-1973) was an English artist who was renowned for series of illustrations depicting flowers and fairies. Her first book, Flower Fairies of the Spring , was published in 1923 and similar books were published in the following decades. Fairies were a popular theme in art and literature in the early 20th century, following the releases of The Coming of the Fairies by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, and the fairy-themed work of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Such themes were made even more popular by Queen Mary in 1920s, as she commonly sent fairy themed postcards to friends.

These botanically accurate drawings, in addition to the enchanting fairy images based on real children from Cicely’s sister’s nursery school, appeal to a sense of magic and wonder.
