Description:

From Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp, 1595. Title: ÆGYPTVS ANTIQVA Terra suis contenta bonis, non indiga mercis Aut Iovis, in solo tanta est fiducia Nilo. Lucanus 8 (Ancient Egypt. A land that of itself is rich enough, needs no foreign aid, Iove's help it scorns, relying as it does on the bounty of the Nile)

This is a beautifully composed and rendered map of Egypt with the River Nile snaking from left to right, showing the numerous historical sites and cities along it's length, and the great river delta, menorah-like at the Mediterranean Sea. An inset shows the port city of Alexandria.
