These prints depict the Battle of Lowestoft, which opened the 2nd Anglo-Dutch War and pitted 109 English ships against 103 Dutch ships. The battle was won decisively by the English, although they were unable to capitalize on the victory.
Petrus Johannes Schotel (b Dordrecht, 19 Aug 1808; d Dresden, 23 July 1865) was a painter and lithographer, son of Johannes Christiaan Schotel. He was a pupil of his father and like him specialized in sea and river views. From 1830 to 1848 he taught drawing at the Marine Instituut in Medemblik. He was an expert on the technical and historical details of ships.
