THE KINGDOME OF ENGLAND, from the atlas Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, London.
A fine example of the map of England & Wales from Speed's Theatre of Great Britain. Embellished with the Royal Coat of Arms, six different species of sea monster, plus two sailing ships. Portraits of typical inhabitants of the land flank the map.
Since the original 1610/11 issue of this map, there have been some changes to the plate, for example the date 1646 bottom left and the publishers' names bottom right. Most interesting, however is the subtle alterations to the costumes: the "Lady" now has a veil; the "Gentle Woman's" bee-hive is covered by a scarf tied under her chin; and the "Citizen" and his wife have their caps replaced by broad-rimmed hats. Whether this was done to show changes in fashion or to show "political correctness" during the Commonwealth is open to question.
