This is an 1866 edition of Colton's Pocket Map: Thirty Three Miles Around the City of New York. It illustrates New York City and surounding areas as far south as Ocean County, New Jersey, as far east as Suffolk County, as far north as Rockland County, and as far west as Somerset County. The area is shown in great detail with particular attention to the various settlements, tolls, roads, and railroads. The map also shows depth soundings for The bay and harbor taken from the 1850 U.S. Coast Survey chart of the region. The map is decorated by a floral border with engraved views depicting of City Hall, New York and City Hall, Brooklyn.
On the bottom of the map, the copyright reads: “Entered according to the Act of Congress in the Year of 1865 by G.W & C.B Colton in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court of the Southern District of New York."
The map is mounted archivally on a rag mat along with the original book the map comes from on the side.
