This portrait was original printed for Rudolph Ackermann’s A History of The University of Oxford by L. Harrison and J.C. Leigh in London circa 1814. Displayed in Ackermann’s publication was a series of historical buildings, views of Oxford and portraits of those who help establish colleges and public buildings in the University of Oxford.

Henry Chichely was born in 1362 at Higham Ferrers in Northamptonshire, where his father became mayor. Educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford, he studied law and enjoy a long, successful career practicing. Henry IV’s government began sending him abroad on ecclesiastical and diplomatic missions and in 1410 he was appointed to the royal council. In 1411 he was enthroned as Bishop of St David’s. Chichely established the All Souls College at Oxford in 1438 shortly before his death in 1443 at the age of 81.
