These maps include roads, railways and waterways; departments are divided into districts, cantons and municipalities. Levasseur’s atlas is noteworthy for its beautiful illustrations in the borders of the maps which include charmingly engraved historic scenes as well as scenes of local culture, dress and commerce. They also include, in French, famous people, historic narratives as well as a discussion of local industry.

Victor Levasseur (1800–1870) was a French cartographer widely known for his distinctive decorative style. He produced numerous maps admired for the artistic content of the scenes and data surrounding the map as well as the detail of the map its self.
