First Open Sea Oil Well. Grand Isle, LA.: Humble Oil and Refining Company Well, which is considered the first ever sunk in open sea, has reached oil bearing strata, eight miles off grand isle, in open Gulf of Mexico. Volume so far has been insufficient to make commercial production profitable, but industry men are hailing the achievement, which has tapped Hugh Oil Bed known to exist under the continental shelf. Company is a subsidiary of Standard Oil, of New Jersey.
