Featured Framing Project - Hot Air Balloonon Jul 7, 2017 at 9:12 am
The hot air balloon was an important invention for cartographers and mapmakers alike as it provided a new means of capturing a city or landscape from the air. To have a "Bird's Eye View" was an essential development in depicting the world and deepening humankind's understanding of it.
Montgolfier's Balloon, by John Wise is a hand-colored lithograph from 1850. Our Framing Director selected the elaborate gold frame to evoke the French flair for ornament. A pale mat was chosen as the foundation for French linework and a painted panel designed to emulate clouds. The linework is subtly shifted so that the balloon appears to be floating upward.
Framed to conservation standards with archival materials.
